MBA Eligibility Criteria in India
Before applying to management programs in India, understanding the eligibility requirements is essential. Requirements vary between institutions, but common standards are established by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and serve as the floor for most approved programs.
Basic Educational Qualification
The standard minimum qualification for MBA or PGDM admission in India is:
- A bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized university
- Minimum 50% aggregate marks (45% for SC/ST/OBC categories in some institutions)
- Final year undergraduate students may apply provisionally, subject to meeting the percentage requirement upon results
Institutions vary in their minimum percentage requirements — some elite programs require 60% or above, while others maintain the AICTE minimum of 50%. Always verify the specific requirement of each institution you apply to.
Work Experience
For full-time two-year MBA programs, most institutions do not require prior work experience for fresh graduates. However, many institutions provide additional weightage to candidates with relevant work experience during the GD/PI evaluation stage. Executive MBA and part-time management programs typically require 3–10 years of professional experience and are designed for mid-career professionals.
Entrance Test Requirements
Candidates must qualify in a recognized management entrance test:
- CAT: Common Admission Test — the most widely accepted; required for IIM admission
- MAT: Management Aptitude Test — accepted at over 600 institutions; conducted multiple times yearly
- CMAT: Common Management Admission Test — conducted by NTA; accepted at many central and state institutions
- GMAT: Graduate Management Admission Test — required for institutions with international MBA programs
- State entrance exams: Maharashtra's MAH-CET, Karnataka's KMAT, Tamil Nadu's TANCET, etc.
NRI and Foreign Student Eligibility
Non-Resident Indian (NRI) candidates residing in India must typically follow the standard CAT/MAT process. NRI candidates residing abroad and foreign nationals are generally exempt from the written entrance test and may apply directly to institutions. Foreign students must obtain a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from India's Ministry of Education and hold a valid student visa.
Corporate Sponsored Candidates
Many institutions welcome candidates sponsored by their employers. Corporate sponsored candidates typically follow the standard entrance examination and selection process but may receive flexibility in scheduling or study leave provisions.
SC/ST/OBC Reservations
Approved management institutions must adhere to government reservation policies for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). Reserved category candidates often benefit from relaxed entrance cut-offs and application fee waivers.
For the most current eligibility norms, always refer to the AICTE Approval Process Handbook and the official prospectus of each institution you are considering.
